Hi Edwina - I think it depends what your husband does, and what you do, regarding where it is best for you to live, as well as the decisions you make for your family.

Gotta admit though, the beach north of Brisbane sounds pretty good! :-)

HI MIchael - I agree that some opportunities aren't available here in the country, but it really depends on what you do.

In a town the size of Dunedin (100,000+), most jobs can be found, if you look. Like any town of any size, all the trades are here, and most of the professions - although if you're a specialist heart surgeon, a big city might be the only option.

And of course if you work in a shop, bank, academia or in middle management, there are those opportunities here too.

One thing I wuld also say is that there are some opportunities here (career-wise) that aren't available in the city. Any of the agricultural careers, you're going to be better off in a place like Dunedin, I'm guessing - and a lot of them offer great career tracks and good money.

In the end, if you want to live in the country, I think you can usually find a way.

Great post,,,,,makes me want to up and go. We have been considering near Mt Gambier in SA or country Victoria but deep down I would love to move to NZ. Hubby is a NZer and I would love to move back there with him but ties to ex partners and kids doesn't allow that right now.

Sounds idyllic in the extreme. My husband's job doesn't really allow for leaving Brisbane, but we've moved to near the beach north of it anyway. It's a compromise for now. Looks like you've really wound up in a wonderful place there. :-)

BTW, agree with 1-8, but re. 9, work opportunities are somewhat more limited in Mosgiel than in Dunedin (which is why people commute to Dunedin daily), and re. 10 there is some congestion through Dunedin during peak hour (but of course NOTHING like what a city such as Melbourne has ... )
