Green cleaning your dishwasher - here's how!

You don't need any of those fancy dishwasher cleaning products. What you do need is a quarter cup of bicarbonate of soda.

If you use a product called "baking soda" check the ingredients to make sure it is pure bicarbonate of soda, and doesn't contain any fillers, such as cornstarch.

To clean your dishwasher, simply sprinkle the bicarb soda into the base of the dishwasher, underneath the roll-out trays. Then run it through a full cycle, without any dishes in it.

You're done!

Check out the inside of your dishwasher, and you'll find it is nice and shiny clean. Too easy!

I have heard of people using vinegar as a wash through the washing machine to get rid of any grime or soap scum, ( for people who are making home made laundry powder/detergent) it can also be used as a fabric softener. Maybe this can be applied to dishwashers too.

Oops, I've never washed my dishwasher! off to do it today because I think it does need it!

DL - I've only used white vinegar in my dishwasher in the other little dispenser (the one where you put the liquid stuff to stop streaks on glasses/cutlery etc) and it works well.

Hi dl - I use vinegar as a rinse aid, instead of those ridiculously expensive rinse aids you can buy in the supermarket, and they work well too.

I'll give the vinegar option a go as well - I just know that the bicarb. methods works well for my dishwasher - I think the abrasiveness of it also helps get the ickies off!

What I am also finding, more and more, is I never need shop bought cleaners.

I think I need to post about my bath cleaning method next! :-)

Hi Nikki - I don't clean mine very often! Mainly when we have people over to visit, actually, just in case one of them offers to load the dishwasher. I don't want them getting too grossed out by it, so I clean it before they come (uh oh, now I'm 'fessing up!).

Yep, I use vinegar as a rinse aid too. In fact, I'm convinced that's all that those expensive rinse aids are! Just vinegar with some blue dye added!

Stopped by after receiving your comment this morning... This post is an answer to my prayers! I have been searching store to store for dishwasher cleaner the past few months, only to find they don't have it in stock. A year ago, the cleaner was something I could find very easily in stores, but now, I am convinced the appliance companies aren't providing it anymore since they want consumers to buy new machines rather than clean up older ones. Our economies the pits right now, you know. THANKS SO MUCH for this tip! I just checked my baking soda box and it's the real thing, so later today, I'll be taking your advice!!!

Great tip with the bi-carb. I'll be using it too very soon! I also use white vinegar as a rinse aid and works just fine. I also use a splash of red vinegar in warm water for my tiled floor. It should only be a splash because too much of the vinegar can affect the grout. My mother had been doing this for years! A small amount of white vinegar in a spray bottle of water also is the best window cleaner. Guaranteed no streaks.

P.S. I'm a newcomer to the blogging world from Melbourne Australia. Looking forward to checking out your blog more often.
